1) Choosing the right boxes
- Use only boxes made from strong cardboard designed for international shipping. These provide durability and ensure the box holds up during transport. Such boxes are available at delivery service offices (FedEx, UPS, private couriers).
- Boxes made from recycled materials or intended for moving (e.g., moving boxes from Walmart or Home Depot) are not ideal for international shipping. They absorb moisture easily and can crack at the corners and sides.
- Heavy-duty boxes with reinforced construction (like UPS or Home Depot Heavy Duty) offer extra protection during transit.
2) Packaging for security
- Ensure the box is securely sealed with tape on all sides. For added safety, consider wrapping the entire box with tape.
- We also recommend using stretch wrap for additional protection against moisture and to prevent unauthorized opening during transit.
- Make sure there are no loose items inside. Fill any empty spaces with special packing materials.
Remember — stickers won’t guarantee the safety of your items during transit. Proper packaging is the only real protection.
3) Dimensional (Volumetric) Weight
When calculating shipping costs, the dimensional (volumetric) weight of the package is taken into account. If it is greater than the actual weight, the shipping cost will be based on the dimensional weight.
What is it? It’s the minimum weight that the carrier assigns to a package based on its size.
Dimensional weight is calculated from the box dimensions. If the box is large but light, it may result in a higher weight being charged than the actual physical weight — and potentially lead to additional costs.
How to avoid overpaying for dimensional weight:
- Proper packaging: Use boxes that match the size of your items.
- Compact packing: Pack items so they take up as little space as possible.
- Choose the right box size: Avoid oversized boxes when not necessary, to minimize empty space and prevent paying extra for dimensional weight.
- Check before sending: Measure and weigh your parcel before shipping to avoid unexpected surcharges. See how to measure it here.
